This Peugeot 205 GTI just sold for a world record price
Mention the Peugeot 205 GTI, and those of a particular age and disposition will immediately splutter out gushing superlatives and make lift-off oversteer gestures. Mention the price the car above just sold for, and they may well splutter out an expletive
Ladies and gentlemen, a 1989 - admittedly mint - Peugeot 205 GTI has just sold at the Silverstone Auction’ classic sale for the sum of £30,938. It’s £12k more than its estimate, and considerably more than anyone in their right minds might spend on a small French hatchback from 1989. It is, apparently, a world record for a 205 GTI at auction.
But then this is a 205 GTI, right? The most holy of hot hatches, and in this example, one that has covered a mere 7,986 miles from new and with just one owner during its comparatively easy life.
The paintwork is "original and superb”. The body is free from damage, scuffs, panel gaps and there is no moisture in the lights. Rear seats? Practically unused. The fronts are in great nick too. There’s even a radio/cassette player, unmarked dashboard, and a set of unkerbed alloys. The tyres are original, though, and will "require replacing”.
So it’s as good as new as you’ll find. But £30k for a 205 GTI? Tell us below whether you think it’s worth it…
